Bangladeshi makes history as first VC of foreign univ

Professor Dr. Sheikh Asif S. Mizan, a distinguished academic with a long history of international teaching experience, has been appointed Vice-Chancellor of Daaru Salaam University in Mogadishu, Somalia.

This historic appointment marks the first time a Bangladeshi scholar has held such a leadership position at a foreign university.

The news was officially confirmed on Daaru Salaam University’s Facebook page on April 2nd, 2024, by the university’s Chancellor, Dr. Osman Mohamed Hassan.

Dr. Mizan, a graduate of Jahangirnagar University’s Department of Government and Politics, boasts a distinguished academic background. He holds three master’s degrees, a PhD, and nearly two decades of teaching experience in various countries around the world.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Mizan served in prominent leadership positions at both the City University of Mogadishu and the Asian University of Bangladesh.

His extensive teaching experience also includes professorships at the Postgraduate School of Alpha University and the University of Buro, alongside visiting professorships at Simad University, Jamhuriya University, Bennadir University, Golis University, Rift Valley University, and New Generation University.

Dr. Mizan is a prolific writer with numerous publications in domestic and international journals.

He is also the author of the book “Women and Politics.” A dedicated advocate for Bangladesh on the global stage, Dr. Mizan has actively participated in international conferences and seminars as a presenter, keynote speaker, and chairperson.

In a statement, Dr. Mizan expressed his immense pride and gratitude for this groundbreaking appointment. He acknowledged the unwavering support of his family, his nation, and his faith.

Dr. Mizan specifically thanked the Government of Bangladesh, Jahangirnagar University, Police Staff College Bangladesh, and the Bangladeshi people for their encouragement and prayers as he embarks on this new endeavor to elevate Bangladesh’s global reputation.

Hailing from a family of educators and social activists in Rangta village, Barishal, Dr. Mizan is not only a renowned academic but also a committed social worker. He previously served as the Charter Joint Secretary of the Rotary Club of Dhaka Scholars.
