Bangladeshi detained at Kolkata Airport

Staff Reporter :

A Bangladeshi citizen has been arrested at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport for allegedly attempting to vandalize airport property.

According to Indian media outlet India Today, the incident occurred on Friday when the Bangladeshi man attempted to break a glass wall at the airport’s transit terminal, causing a scene of chaos.

The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammad Ashraful, a resident of Narayanganj. He had arrived in Kolkata from Singapore on an IndiGo flight on Friday evening. He was scheduled to fly to Dhaka via a connecting flight. Upon arrival, Ashraful was waiting at the airport’s international transit lounge. Suddenly, he tried to break the terminal’s glass wall and exit the airport, according to India Today.

Members of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detained Ashraful at the spot. He reportedly started speaking incoherently, raising concerns among security personnel about his mental health.
CISF personnel later handed him over to the Airport Police Station. Subsequently, Bidhannagar Police placed him under formal arrest.
It has been confirmed that Ashraful had been living and working in Singapore. Further investigations are underway against him.
Meanwhile, anti-Bangladeshi sentiment has reportedly been on the rise in India for nearly a year. The situation has escalated to such an extent that Bengali-speaking people in various Indian states are being harassed under suspicion of being Bangladeshis. Some individuals-who are actually Indian citizens-have reportedly been pushed back into Bangladesh. This has sparked tensions in the Indian state of West Bengal.
