Bangladesh will play in World Cup Hockey Amirul
Sabbir Hossain :
“If there will be no long gap in local hockey competition, Bangladesh will play in World Cup Hockey”, said Amirul Islam. Amirul spoke to this Reporter over telephone on Wednesday.
Amirul said, ” I started my hockey carrier after taking part in the School Hockey Competition in 2015. Then, I participated in the trial, organised by Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan (BKSP) in 2016, I was allowed in that Test and I became a student of BKSP. After passing my HSC examination, I have admitted in Dhaka University. My subject is Information Science and Library Management. I have finished my two semesters in that subject.”
He said, ” I have taken part for Dhaka University in the Inter-University Hockey Competition.”
The 19-year-old hockey star of Bangladesh said, ” Our target was to play in the ‘Super 16’ of 2025 Men’s FIH Hockey Junior World Cup, which was held at Tamil Nadu in India recently. But we couldn’t do that as we drew with South Korea 3-3 in our Pool-F match, but we had every chance to beat them. Besides, we had also opportunity to get victory against Australia in our Pool-F match, but we lost to them. However, we were committed to earn a good result in a place-deciding match. We achieved the Challenger Trophy after defeating Austria by 5-4 goals and became 17th out of 24 teams. Our Head Coach Siegfried Aikman motivated us a lot to achieve the feat. He is a top level coach and he inspired us by supporting us to get team spirit and team combination. “
Amirul, who is called ‘Hamza of Hockey’ said, ” Hamza Bhai has brought renaissance in Bangladesh’s Football. When anybody has called me ‘Hamza of Hockey’, I feel good. I want to bring Bangladesh’s Hockey
up to the mark. My dream is to play in the Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup.”
Amirul also said, ” I could score 18 goals in six matches of Hockey Junior World Cup as I tried my level best to capitalize the penalty corners. There is a culture in our country to score by utilising the penalty corner. I followed that method and I got results.”
” If the domestic competitions, Premier League and invitational tournaments will be held here on regular basis, Bangladesh will improve their position in World Hockey”, he added.
