Bangladesh to join UN peacekeeping meet on future missions
Staff Reporter :
Bangladesh, one of the world’s leading contributors to United Nations peacekeeping missions, is set to participate in the upcoming UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting, scheduled to begin on Tuesday in Berlin, Germany.
Foreign Affairs Adviser to the interim government, Md Touhid Hossain, departed from Dhaka on Monday morning to represent Bangladesh at the high-level two-day conference.
He will lead the country’s delegation at the event, which runs from May 13 – 14.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministerial meeting will bring together leaders and representatives from UN member states to deliberate on the future of global peacekeeping and reinforce collective commitments.
Bangladesh, once the top contributor to UN peacekeeping missions and currently ranked third-behind Nepal and Rwanda-continues to maintain a strong presence in international peace operations.
The Adviser is expected to underscore Bangladesh’s longstanding contributions to UN missions, its present standing, and the government’s future plans to support and strengthen global peace efforts.
In preparation for this conference, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, visited Dhaka in mid-April and held discussions with Adviser Hossain regarding key themes of the upcoming meeting.
Held every two years, the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference is a strategic platform to shape the future of peacekeeping and reaffirm political support from participating nations.
