Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) President Dr. Col. Oli Ahamed (Retd), Bir Bikram, asserted that Bangladesh remains the safest place for minority communities.
Speaking at a press conference at the LDP central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka, on Saturday, Col. Oli dismissed claims from Indian media about the oppression of Hindus in the country.
“Until 5th August, various Indian media outlets alleged that Hindus were being persecuted in Bangladesh, and their homes were being set on fire. These reports are entirely baseless,” he stated.
Col. Oli acknowledged that some unfortunate incidents had occurred but clarified the nature of the violence.
“In some areas, enraged mobs attacked members of the Awami League, specifically targeting those viewed as tyrants and perpetrators of mass murder. However, these attacks were not based on religious identity but on political affiliations. The accomplices of the mass murderers from the fallen Awami League regime were the ones targeted,” he added.
He drew parallels to similar events in history, saying, “This has happened in many countries throughout the ages. I reiterate that Bangladesh remains one of the safest places for minority communities to live.”
Col. Oli went on to criticise the past 15 years of governance under the Awami League.
e accused the former regime of using government officials at all levels to seize power without elections, engage in widespread corruption, loot banks, launder money, and enforce discrimination in areas such as employment.
He also condemned the inhumane treatment of opposition parties, extortion, land grabbing, price manipulation by syndicates, and human rights violations.
“For 15 years, the oppressed people remained silent, but on 5th August 2024, the people of this country reclaimed their independence,” he declared. “Our sons and daughters are the rightful heirs of this nation, and we are immensely proud of this generation.”
The press conference was attended by several senior members of the LDP, including Secretary General and former Minister Redwan Ahmed, Presidium Members Nurul Amin Talukdar, Dr. Neyamul Bashir, and Dr. Awrangzeb Belal, along with Advisor Principal Mahbubur Rahman and Joint-Secretary General Bilal Hossain Miyaji.
During the event, the LDP presented an 8-point demand to the Chief Adviser and made recommendations to the Interim Government. Among their key demands was the prosecution of all killings that took place during the 15-year tenure of the ousted Awami League regime.
