Energy expert Badrul Imam, a professor of the Geography and Environment Department at Dhaka University, has said that Bangladesh has to count losses in the energy sector by walking the path of import for 10 years without exploring gas.
He said this at a seminar on energy policy arranged by the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) at CIRDAP in the capital on Sunday (June 30).
Badrul Imam said that the government has been repeatedly told that there is a sufficient amount of underground gas in the country. “But the government has not paid any attention to this issue and has gone ahead with the import of LPG. Due to this, Bangladesh has lost a decade in the energy sector.”
Badrul Imam suggested that Bangladesh, which has significant gas potential, could have become as wealthy in the gas sector as Nigeria or America, but its progress has been hindered by a lack of self-will and foresight.
Citing India as an example, this energy expert said that Chevron had dug 13 wells in Rajasthan, India, and did not find any gas. Everyone then said that there was no use in digging wells here. But relying on the survey, gas was found by digging well number 14.
