Bangladesh is hopeful about reaching a mutually beneficial tariff agreement with the United States, according to Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser.
In a Facebook post published Tuesday morning, Alam stated, “Dhaka is looking forward to a tariff deal with Washington DC, which we hope will be win-win for both countries.”
He noted that Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin is currently in Washington DC, heading a high-level delegation for ongoing trade negotiations with US officials. National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman is also accompanying the team.
The development follows a letter received from US President Donald Trump on Monday, informing the Bangladeshi government that a 35 percent tariff on Bangladeshi goods will come into effect starting August 1.
Alam confirmed that several rounds of discussions have already taken place between the two sides, with the next round scheduled for July 9, to be led by Sheikh Bashiruddin.
The Bangladesh government is seeking to negotiate terms that would mitigate the impact of the proposed tariff hike while strengthening bilateral trade relations.
