Tariq Raihan Kazi’s first-half header guided Bangladesh to a 1-0 win over Seychelles in the first friendly of the two-match FIFA Friendly football match at the Sylhet District Stadium on Saturday.
It was Tariq’s first international goal in his 12th appearance in Bangladesh jersey after making his debut under former head coach Jamie Day in 2021.
Eleta Kingsley made his long-awaited debut as Bangladesh registered their first-ever victory against an African side.
Eleta, who has been playing Bangladeshi clubs for around a decade, was subbed on in the second half, ending a long and arduous journey for the striker who has been trying to play for Bangladesh for many years.
In order to play for Bangladesh, Eleta had to abandon his Nigerian citizenship and become a citizen of Bangladesh.
The 33-year old Abahani Limited forward replaced Aminur Rahman Sojib, who couldn’t make any impact earlier as no team managed to create any clear-cut chances before the hosts broke the deadlock.
Tariq gave the breakthrough two minutes from half-time whistle with a powerful header after Brandon Shaphy’s headed clearance from a Jamal Bhuiyan free-kick met him inside the box.
Kingsley had a couple of chances after coming off the bench. The striker had chance to mark his debut with a goal but the keeper saved the effort in the dying minutes of the game.
Just after the hour-mark, Kingsley fired over the bar in one-on-one with the opponent goalkeeper after finely set up by other substitute Matin Mia who replaced Jamal.
The Seychelles keeper produced a fine save to deny Kingsley’s left-footer from just outside the box two minutes before the end of stipulated time.
The second match of the series will be held at the same venue Tuesday.Agency
