The interim government has officially revoked the “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Peace Award.”
The decision to cancel the “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Peace Award” was made during a meeting of the Advisory Council, chaired by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday.
Although the policy for the award was finalised under the previous Awami League government, no recipient had ever been chosen or honoured.
The policy, which received final approval on May 20, 2024, was designed to recognise individuals who made notable contributions to global peace. Despite the formal approval, no awards were ever conferred. Just 10 months after the policy’s enactment, the interim government has now decided to revoke it.
Under the original policy, the Awami League government had planned to present the award biennially, with the recipient receiving $100,000, an 18-carat gold medal weighing 50 grams, and a certificate of recognition.
