Ban, eradicate AL from politics

Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has called for the complete political and ideological eradication of the Awami League (AL) from Bangladesh, advocating for the party to be legally banned and permanently removed from the country’s political landscape.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain stated that the Awami League should be eradicated not only politically but also ideologically. He argued that this should be achieved through legal and social processes, referencing Truth Commissions and historical precedents from other nations.
“The Awami League should not only be banned but also politically eradicated from Bangladesh. This is my personal stance. Now, discussions may take place on how this will be implemented. There are precedents of this in various countries,” he wrote.
In his post, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain recounted personal experiences, claiming that he had witnessed his brothers being martyred by Awami League members and that he himself had been a victim of enforced disappearance.
“I have seen my brothers martyred by their AL men firing before my eyes. I have been a victim of disappearance; I have seen death up close. It is impossible to even think of the political rehabilitation of the Awami League,” he declared.
He also addressed previous statements regarding AL’s participation in elections.
“As I did not elaborate… my statement may not have been conveyed clearly. Some media outlets have also presented my statement differently. Here [in the statement, it was not said to allow the Awami League to participate in elections. That question is irrelevant before a trial,” he explained.
Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain emphasised the need for a permanent solution to eliminate the Awami League from Bangladeshi politics, warning that failure to do so could enable the party to return to power.
“If we don’t take decisive action, the Awami League will find a way to return to power today or tomorrow. The Awami League had banned Jamaat-e-Islami, but did that stop Jamaat’s politics?” he questioned.
He proposed an “integrated process” to ensure the permanent removal of the Awami League while acknowledging that the party still has a significant number of beneficiaries.
He also addressed the issue of accountability, stating, “Many people ask why they should apologize if they have done nothing wrong. Of course, they must apologise for their involvement with any form of Awami League as a fascist enabler or a beneficiary. This process must be completed transparently and in phases.”
