The court has rejected bail for former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy in two of the five newly filed cases in which she was recently shown arrested. On Thursday (4 December) afternoon, District and Sessions Judge Abu Shamim Azad rejected the bail petitions after a hearing.
On this day, the court heard bail petitions in two cases one filed over an attack on police at the Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station area, and another relating to the murder of Yasin in Fatullah. Narayanganj court police inspector Kayum Khan said the court has denied Ivy’s bail in both the police-attack case filed at the Sadar Model Police Station, and in the Fatullah Yasin murder case. Ivy’s lawyer, Advocate Awlad Hossain, said that despite Ivy’s name not appearing in the FIRs of these two cases, her bail petitions were rejected. “We plan to move to the High Court regarding this. Although the High Court has already granted her bail in five cases, she has been newly implicated in five more cases none of which contain her name,” he said.
Earlier, Ivy was detained on 9 May in connection with a murder case linked to the anti discrimination student movement. Since then, she has been held at the Kashimpur Central Women’s Prison in Gazipur. Later, police showed her arrested in four more cases. Meanwhile, on 9 November, a High Court bench comprising Justice A.S.M. Abdul Mobin and Justice Md. Saghir Hossain granted Ivy bail in five cases. On the same day, Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station applied to show her arrested in a case filed over an attack on police and obstruction of government work. The following day, Fatullah Model Police Station sought to show her arrested in four additional cases related to casualties during the anti-discrimination movement. Additionally, on 18 November, the court granted police permission to arrest former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy
in five cases.
