Baharul Alam has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), replacing Md Moinul Islam, while Sheikh Sazzad Ali has been appointed the new Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Baharul Alam retired from the police force in 2020.

The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the appointments through separate circulars on Wednesday afternoon (November 20).

Earlier, Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain disclosed the news during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday evening.

In addition to the change in the IGP position, a change has also been made in the DMP commissioner role, with Sheikh Sazzad Ali taking over as Commissioner of DMP.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5, most senior police officials were replaced. Abdullah Al Mamun, the former IGP, is currently incarcerated, and many officers holding the rank of additional IGP were sent into retirement.

Md Moinul Islam was appointed IGP immediately after the government’s fall, with Mainul Hossain later being appointed DMP Commissioner.

Baharul Alam previously served as the head of the Special Branch (SB) of the police. From 2009 to 2013, he worked as a police liaison officer with the United Nations Peacekeeping Division at its headquarters. In 2015, he served as senior police advisor to the UN peacekeeping mission in Afghanistan. Prior to this, he worked in Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo, and Sierra Leone. Baharul Alam had been deprived of promotion twice before his retirement in 2020.

On the other hand, Sheikh Sajjat Ali started his police career with BCS 1984 batch. He served as deputy commissioner of DMP’s Tejgaon Division.

He also served as superintendent of police of Lakshmipur. He later served as the deputy inspector general of Chattogram and Dhaka ranges. Besides, when the highway police was formed, he got the responsibility of DIG there.

Later, he worked as an additional IGP at the police headquarters.
Sajjat Ali lost his job during the Awami League regime. Recently, his job was reinstated by the interim government.
