Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar yesterday addressed recent controversy regarding former army officer Brigadier General Abdullahil Aman Azmi’s statement on changing Bangladesh’s national anthem.

Speaking at a press conference in Rangpur, Parwar emphasized that Azmi’s remarks were his personal opinion and not reflective of the party’s stance.

“Azmi is not a member of Jamaat-e-Islami. What he said about the national anthem is entirely his personal comment, and Jamaat has no obligation to provide any explanation for it,” Parwar clarified when questioned by reporters.

Azmi, the son of the late Ghulam Azam, former Jamaat ameer, had caused a stir with his recent comment about the anthem.

The press conference, presided over by Rangpur City Jamaat Ameer
ATM Azam Khan, was attended by several prominent leaders, including Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim, central executive committee member Mahbubur Rahman Belal, Dinajpur district Ameer Golam Rabbani, and Shibir Secretary Nurul Huda.

Parwar also addressed recent allegations made by prominent citizens, who accused Jamaat Ameer of attempting to erase the nation’s past. Dismissing the claims, Parwar said, “The Jamaat Ameer has made no such statement, and therefore, the party will not respond to the citizens’ allegations.”

On broader issues, Parwar pointed to necessary reforms within government institutions, particularly the Election Commission, as the primary challenge facing the country.

“Cleaning the mess of the past 15 years will take time. While interim governments may not be able to implement all necessary reforms, those crucial for a fair election are essential,” he said.

The event concluded with Jamaat leaders distributing financial aid to families of martyrs from the anti-discriminatory student movement, highlighting the party’s continued involvement in grassroots support efforts.
