A awareness seminar on gender discrimination in healthcare was organized at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The awareness seminar was held at the conference room of SOMCH on Saturday afternoon, organized by Community Participation and Development (CPD) Dhaka, Bangladesh, funded by the British Council, in collaboration with the University of Greenwich and BMSS.
The day-long seminar focused on ensuring gender-sensitive policies, access, services and resources in the health sector to achieve gender equality. The importance of eliminating discriminatory misconceptions, creating equal opportunities for both women and men, and removing gender-based barriers to accessing healthcare was emphasized. The seminar drew the attention of the concerned authorities to gender-sensitive training of healthcare workers, increasing the number of female health workers, and establishing accessible health centers for women. Everyone was called upon to come forward to create awareness and empower women and girls about their health rights, including ensuring equal participation of women and men in the health sector. The seminar was addressed by Professor Dr. Shamima Akhter Meem, Associate Professor Dr. Nahida Zafarin of SOMCH, Associate Professor Dr. Kenisa Linton of Greenwich University, British Council Representative Sarkar Asif Iqbal, PhD Researcher Fatima Kaniz Nayan of Greenwich University, IUB Lecturer Afnan Yusuf, CPD’s Sharif Ullah Riaz and Md. Fazlul Haque. The event was organized by Bangladesh Medical Students Society (BMSS), on whose behalf the Vice President Ruhus Sadia spoke. The seminar was conducted by Mehreen Khan and Sayak Chakraborty, students of the 62nd batch of SOMCH.
