Zonayed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan, has expressed concerns about attempts being made to create divisions between various groups, including state institutions, in Bangladesh. He warned that these efforts could lead to instability in the country and disrupt the democratic process.
“Different attempts are being made to create instability by pitting people, state institutions, and even the army against each other. Such instability will not bring any good to us,” Saki said during a discussion and Iftar Mahfil organized by the Rangpur metropolitan and district units of Ganosamhati Andolan at Rupkatha Community Hall in Rangpur city on Sunday evening.
Saki called on all political parties, individuals, and even the interim government to play a crucial role in ensuring the continuation of the democratic process. “We must all contribute to realizing the dreams of the people of this country. Those creating instability should act responsibly,” he added.
Saki also criticized the Awami League leadership, specifically targeting Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of being responsible for the killings of women and children during her tenure. He demanded justice for those involved in these alleged crimes, stating,
“Sheikh Hasina must be held accountable for these actions. Those involved, including Hasina, must face justice for the killings, which were carried out with helicopter gunfire.”
Saki further claimed that conspiracies and mob attacks, disguised as actions by “Towhidi Janata,” are ongoing. He argued that such events serve the interests of Indian media and the Indian ruling party, who wish to shape Bangladesh’s global image according to their preferences.
He also mentioned comments made by Tulsi Gayward, head of the US intelligence department, concerning Bangladesh, asserting that such remarks reflect a broader narrative being formed internationally.
Saki reflected on the 1990 mass uprising that led to the fall of a dictatorship. While people had hoped for democracy, he argued that there had been little change in the state system since then. “Post-1990 governments have failed to bring about fundamental change and have continued to suppress the people’s right to vote and the power they held,” he said.
He further criticized Sheikh Hasina’s rule, stating that upon taking power, Hasina abolished the supervisory system, effectively consolidating state power and undermining the people’s right to vote. “She has established a terrible fascism in the country,” he added.
Saki condemned the 2014, 2018, and 2024 national elections, labeling them as a farce. He accused Hasina of manipulating elections by rigging votes in the dead of night, electing 153 candidates unopposed, and fielding dummy candidates from her own party. “She has turned the elections into a mockery, robbing people of their votes,” he said.
The event was chaired by Md. Abdul Jabbar, Convener of Ganosamhati Andolan’s Rangpur metropolitan unit, and moderated by Pratyayee Mizan, District Organizer of Rangpur. Among those who spoke at the event were Shamsuzzaman Samu, Convener of Rangpur Metropolitan BNP, Amin Uddin B.Sc, President of Rangpur District JSD, and Touhidur Rahman, Convener of Ganosamhati Andolan’s Rangpur district, among others.
