NN Online:
The Supreme Court on Tuesday scheduled Thursday for the next hearing in the appeal filed by Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam challenging his conviction and death sentence in a war crimes case.
Azharul’s counsel, Advocate Shishir Monir, stated that nearly 90% of the hearing was completed on Tuesday. The Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, then fixed Thursday for the continuation of proceedings.
In December 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced Azharul to death for crimes against humanity—including rape, abduction, torture, and mass killings—committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
Azharul initially appealed the ICT verdict to the Supreme Court, but his plea was rejected. He subsequently filed a review petition against the Appellate Division’s judgment.
On February 26 this year, the Supreme Court accepted his review petition and granted a rehearing of the appeal against the death sentence.
