Asif Nazrul blames Hasina for Khaleda Zia’s death
Staff Reporter :
Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul on Tuesday accused former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her administration of bearing responsibility for the death of BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, alleging that years of imprisonment and mistreatment severely damaged her health.
“We might not have lost her at such an early stage had she not endured repeated torture during her time in prison.
In my personal view, the fascist prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her government are unquestionably responsible for Begum Zia’s death,” Asif Nazrul told journalists.
He made the comments after attending a special meeting of the Advisory Council at the State Guest House Jamuna in the afternoon.
The law adviser said Khaleda Zia had been jailed on what he described as a “mockery of justice” and was subjected to inhumane treatment.
According to him, subsequent legal proceedings, including appeals and reviews, exposed the verdict against her as unfounded.
“The Supreme Court, particularly the Appellate Division, has repeatedly observed in its rulings that the case leading to Begum Zia’s conviction was fundamentally defective, deliberate, and highly questionable,” he said.
Asif Nazrul also referred to the role of the interim government, stating that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus personally oversaw all issues related to Khaleda Zia’s medical treatment.
“If there had been any possibility to send her abroad again for advanced treatment, our government would have fully supported it. The chief adviser himself closely monitored these matters,” he said, adding that it was the government’s misfortune that such steps could not be taken earlier.
He further said the interim administration took solace in the fact that Khaleda Zia passed away with dignity and widespread public respect.
“Our only consolation is that she departed with honour and the love of people from all walks of life across the country,” he added.
The law adviser also announced that a meeting would be held at the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure proper security arrangements for Khaleda Zia’s funeral and burial.
“We want tomorrow’s funeral and burial to be conducted peacefully and in an orderly manner.
We seek the cooperation of all concerned,” he said, while also thanking the media for what he described as their continued cooperation with the government since the fall of the previous regime.
