Adviser on environment, forest and climate change, and water resources, Syeda Rizwana Hasan has emphasized the importance of coordination and information exchange of all countries to deal with natural disasters in the Asian region.
She emphasized this importance at a workshop on ‘Advanced Forecasting through Hydrosus’ at Sonargaon Hotel in the capital on Wednesday.
In the speech as the chief guest, Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that the information of the upstream countries is important in dealing with various natural disasters like drought, heavy rains and floods. She called on India, China and Bhutan to share upstream rainfall, floods, droughts, storms and other natural data to deal with disasters in downstream regions like Bangladesh.
Besides, Rizwana Hasan urged the Directorate of Meteorology, Directorate of Disaster Management, Flood Forecasting and Warning Center and related public and private institutions to work together in advance forecasting and disaster management.
Secretary of Disaster Management and Relief Kamrul Hasan, Secretary of Water Resources Nazmul Ahsan, Head of Hydrology and Water Resources of World Meteorological Organization Dr. Virin Kim, Defense Secretary Ashraf Uddin, Director of Meteorological Department Shadekul Alam and representatives of various organizations also spoke.
Speakers at the workshop hope that if the Hydrosous project is implemented, Bangladesh, Nepal and other countries will be able to prevent environmental disasters, landslides and land erosion, flash floods, and ensure the availability of freshwater, eliminate river pollution, and waterlogging. It will also play an important role to deal with the adverse effects of climate change, drought and food security risks.
