After months of high prices straining household budgets, vegetable costs in the capital have eased, offering relief to residents. With winter produce arriving, most vegetables now sell for Tk 50–60 per kilogram, down from the prolonged period of steep inflation.

Despite the overall decline, some items remain costly, with round eggplant still at Tk 120 per kg. Eggs and chicken have also become more affordable, with eggs dropping Tk 5–10 per dozen and chicken Tk 10–20 per kg.

Traders attribute the decline to increased supply and larger shipments reaching city markets, while shoppers welcomed the reprieve, noting that grocery shopping has become more manageable.

A visit to Raisaheb Bazar, Jattra Bari Kitchen Market, and Kaptan Bazar shows lower prices across a wide range of produce.

Bitter gourd sells for Tk 60 per kg, gourd Tk 40–50, long beans Tk 60, potatoes Tk 20, and bananas Tk 30 per dozen. Seasonal vegetables like chichinga, jhinga, dhundal, kankrol, and dhands are Tk 50–60 per kg.

Patol is Tk 60, papaya Tk 25–30, kachurmukhi Tk 40, beans Tk 60, and cauliflower, leafy cabbage, and jhali pumpkin Tk 40. Long and white brinjals are Tk 60, while round brinjal remains high at Tk 120. Tomatoes sell for Tk 100–120, and carrots remain unchanged at Tk 150 for Chinese and Tk 80 for local varieties.

Abul Hamid, a vendor at Raisaheb Bazar, said, “Most vegetables are affordable again, except round brinjal, which is still limited.”

Shoppers echoed the relief. Ramesh Mondal, a primary school teacher, said, “For months, vegetable prices were too high. Now with most items at Tk 50–60, it finally feels manageable.”
The poultry market has also seen price reductions. Red eggs now cost Tk 130–135 per dozen and white eggs Tk 120, while duck eggs have fallen to around Tk 70 each. Broiler chicken is Tk 160–170 per kg, golden chicken Tk 260–300, and farm eggs Tk 130 per dozen. Beef, however, remains unchanged at Tk 750 per kg.

Egg seller Md Swapan confirmed the trend, saying, “Egg prices have fallen by Tk 5–10 per dozen since last week, depending on supply.” Onion prices remain slightly high at Tk 80 per kg, local garlic is Tk 100–120, imported garlic Tk 160–180, potatoes Tk 20, and lentils Tk 155–160 per kg. Overall, the recent price decline has brought much-needed relief to households — at least for now.
