Arresting hundreds and thousands is no solution to the present political crisis.

Excessive police brutality will only aggravate the crisis. Peace of a graveyard is not law and order in politics.

Thugs with ‘helmets’ are threatening opposition activists visiting house to house.

For fear of life, many have fled from their houses in this atmosphere of intimidation.

Besides mass arrests of opposition leaders and activities by police, court verdicts are also awarded.

Even on Thursday a whopping 199 BNP activists were reportedly sentenced with different jail terms by the court in cases relating to political violence.

Before the forthcoming election which the main opposition BNP has boycotted, this quick disposal of cases is very telling.

Sentencing of opposition activists intensified after prime minister Sheikh Hasina asked the lawyers on October 21 to settle the political cases of arson attacks by taking prompt measures.

A national daily reported yesterday, a total of 630 BNP leaders and activists were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in the past three months.

In contrast to our present generation of political leaders, the great leaders like AK Fazlul Haq or HS Suhrawardy never thought of being surrounded by thugs and dangerous criminals.

Now it is fashionable for the so-called political leaders to keep and maintain dangerous young thugs.

They want to be feared for their crimes against the people amassing wealth inconceivable even in their dreams.

To those mafia leaders as desperado looters of banks and plunderers of public money, free and fair election means sure change of their government.

They have to take all the risks of hijacking the upcoming election in the face of public resistance and US visa sanction. Some of them are hiding in foreign countries.

The general public is deadly worried about bloody confrontation and loss of lives during the election.

But they have no choice if they want to save themselves from despotic repression causing the people’s lives unsafe and insecure.

There is no end to the miseries of the people arising from abject poverty.

There is no remedy for the wrongs people are suffering at the hands of desperado criminals, as the judiciary is not outside the fear of state terrorism.

While utter dark forces of vicious politics have descended on the political arena, the country is on the verge of economic collapse and chaos.

The country is in fear of collapsing into anarchy. In our view, stopping the few master desperado plunderers of public property is the solution.

They are seeking protection of political leaders which they are not in realty.

By any definition, a politician or political leader is a person devoted to serving the people selflessly.

These people do not come to politics to become millionaires.
