Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Latiful Bari, commander of Joypurhat 20 BGB Battalion, has called on journalists to play a more responsible role in countering misleading rumors and propaganda surrounding the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections. Addressing the journalists at a BGB meeting on the 13th National Parliament election at the battalion’s Cafe Twenty Hallroom in Joypurhat on Thursday (December 25) afternoon, he said, “Your pens and cameras will reveal the truth, and that truth will play a big role in keeping the election peaceful. Journalists will maintain public trust by presenting accurate information on violence or illegal activities.”
He also called on journalists to be vigilant and present factual news on the issue of violence, intimidation, pressure on voters, attempts to seize polling stations or the threat of chaos surrounding the national parliamentary elections, to present the real picture and public opinion on the flow of illegal money in border areas, the activities of criminal gangs or organized crime, and to identify rumors, fake news and provocative campaigns spread through social media or any other means so as not to create confusion and panic in the public mind.
Latiful Bari said that the BGB has increased surveillance in the border and interior areas to keep the voting fair and peaceful. They will always be on the ground to ensure a safe environment. The meeting was attended by 20 BGB Assistant Director Mohammad Imran Hossain, concerned officials and local media representatives.
