Around 61,000 tonnes of US wheat arrives
Staff Reporter :
A vessel transporting approximately 61,000 tonnes of wheat from the United States has reached the outer anchorage of Chittagong Port, marking another milestone in Bangladesh’s ongoing wheat import programme under a government-to-government (G2G) agreement.
This was confirmed in a press release by Imdad Islam, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Food.
The MV SPAR ARIES, carrying 60,802 metric tonnes of wheat, arrived under the cash purchase agreement between the U.S. and Bangladesh, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two governments.
This shipment is part of a broader plan to import a total of 440,000 metric tonnes of wheat from the United States this year.
The first shipment under this G2G arrangement, consisting of 56,959 metric tonnes, arrived on 25 October 2025.
Authorities have already begun testing samples of wheat from the current shipment to ensure quality standards are met before unloading.
The Ministry of Food stated that all necessary measures have been taken to expedite unloading once the testing is completed, ensuring a smooth supply chain for storage and distribution.
The imports aim to strengthen national food security and stabilize domestic wheat prices amid rising global demand and supply uncertainties.
This initiative is part of Bangladesh’s strategy to diversify wheat sourcing and secure consistent food imports through direct government arrangements, reducing dependency on international market fluctuations.
