Reasserting the government’s zero-tolerance policy on mob violence, the Bangladesh Army has pledged to take a firm stand against any such disorder to safeguard public safety and restore citizens’ confidence.
In a statement released on its official Facebook page at 12:29am on Saturday, the army stressed its readiness to adopt even stricter measures if circumstances demand.
The announcement came in the wake of violent clashes between Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad activists in Dhaka’s Kakrail area on Friday evening, which left several injured. Police were initially deployed to contain the situation but later called in army support as the unrest worsened.
According to the army, security forces first urged both sides to disperse peacefully and settle their disputes within the legal framework. “Despite repeated calls, some activists defied instructions, resorted to mob violence, and launched coordinated attacks on law enforcers,” the statement said.
By around 9pm, tensions escalated further as demonstrators staged a torch procession, pelted security personnel with brickbats, and attempted to set fire to several structures. Movement in Bijoynagar, Naya Paltan, and nearby areas came to a standstill. At least five army personnel were reportedly injured.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the army’s commitment to preserving law and order, ensuring public security, and maintaining peace.
