The Bangladesh Army has strongly rejected an India Today report published on March 25, 2025, which falsely claimed that an emergency meeting was held amid the possibility of a coup against Chief Adviser Dr Mohammad Yunus.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Army’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) labelled the article as misleading and fabricated, stating that it was based on false and baseless information.
“The Bangladesh Army has noted with concern that India Today has once again circulated a report founded on unsubstantiated claims regarding a routine meeting of the Bangladesh Army,” the rejoinder read.
The article, titled “Bangladesh Army Holds Emergency Meeting Amid Possibility of Coup Against Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus,” was condemned as a clear example of journalistic irresponsibility.
The ISPR further criticised the report for lacking credible sources or verifiable evidence and described the claims of an “impending coup” as entirely fabricated.
The statement expressed concern over India Today’s continued propagation of sensational narratives without proper fact-checking or adherence to journalistic ethics.
“This is not the first time India Today has published misleading reports about the Bangladesh Army,” the ISPR added, referring to a similar false report that was debunked in a rejoinder issued on March 11, 2025.
The Army’s statement highlighted the repeated pattern of misinformation in India Today’s reporting, raising serious concerns about the media outlet’s editorial practices, which appear to have shifted from factual reporting to sensationalism.
Reaffirming its commitment to national service, democracy, and peace, the Bangladesh Army urged media outlets, including India Today, to adhere to responsible journalism and refrain from publishing unfounded claims that foster division and mistrust between the peoples of the two nations.
