Army probes abuse allegation against senior officer
Staff Reporter :
The Bangladesh Army has established a high-level investigation board to examine allegations of abuse made against a senior army officer, following claims that recently surfaced on social media.
According to a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Friday, the complainant is the former wife of a dismissed army officer. The ex-officer had previously been convicted in a high-profile criminal case, dismissed from service, and is currently serving a prison sentence.
The ISPR stated that the Army was aware of the allegation prior to its appearance on social media and had already begun an investigation. Given the complainant’s social standing and the sensitivity of the matter, the Army said it had proceeded under military law with “appropriate caution”.
The accused senior officer has been relieved of his duties, and disciplinary proceedings are under way. The Army confirmed that the investigation board is tasked with establishing the facts, with further action to follow based on its findings.
The statement also clarified that, under Army regulations, dismissed personnel are not entitled to official accommodation, medical services, or other benefits. However, in this instance, temporary housing in government quarters was provided to the dismissed officer’s family on humanitarian grounds, given that his child was preparing for SSC examinations.
Reaffirming its commitment to moral values and discipline, the Bangladesh Army stressed that it does not tolerate unethical or immoral conduct. All allegations against its members are investigated with due seriousness and, if proven, met with strict legal action in accordance with the law.
