Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, has claimed that Army Chief General Waqar Uz Zaman reluctantly accepted the decision to appoint Dr Yunus as Chief Adviser.

A Facebook post by Hasnat Abdullah, the chief organiser of the National Citizens’ Party (South Region), on Thursday night has sparked widespread political discussion.

Amid this, a video of Asif Mahmud was posted on Hasnat Abdullah’s verified Facebook account on Friday afternoon, in which Asif revealed this sensational information about the Army Chief.

Asif stated that General Waqar Uz Zaman had initially vetoed Dr Yunus’s appointment as Chief Adviser. He questioned why Yunus was being chosen when anyone else could be appointed instead.

Asif pointed out that Yunus had legal cases against him and was a convicted individual. “How can a convicted person become the Chief Adviser of a country?” he questioned.

Asif further claimed that the Army Chief had expressed concerns about the Awami League’s strong opposition to Yunus.

“The Awami League absolutely cannot accept this person, and ultimately, 30-40% of the population supports the Awami League. Should we appoint someone as Chief Adviser against the will of this significant portion of the population?” the Army Chief reportedly asked.

According to Asif, the Army Chief ultimately said, “I have accepted this decision with a heavy heart.”
