The interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, has strongly condemned any form of custodial torture and murder, issuing a statement through the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing regarding the death of BNP leader Touhidul Islam in Cumilla.
The government has ordered an urgent investigation into the incident.
In its statement, the interim government expressed deep concern over the case, saying, “Police brought a young person, Touhidul Islam, to hospital in Cumilla late last night with injuries allegedly inflicted by security forces after they apprehended him from his house early on Friday morning based on complaints.”
Meanwhile, an army camp commander has been withdrawn following the death of Md Touhidul Islam, according to Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR).
Proper steps have been taken to investigate this unexpected and tragic incident, and a high-level committee has been formed to debunk the exact cause of death, said a statement of the ISPR on Saturday.
He was detained from Adarsha Sadar Upazila of Cumilla in a joint force operation around 3AM based on specific allegations. “If found guilty in the investigation, legal action will be taken against the responsible people as per army law,” it added.
In this regards, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has alleged that plainclothes individuals “tortured and murdered” Comilla Jubo Dal leader Touhidul Islam.
He also emphasized the need for an investigation into whether allies of the Awami League, hiding within the government and administration, were responsible for this incident.
Referring to the custodial death of a Juba Dal leader in Cumilla, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said law enforcement agency caught a Jubo Dal man in Cumilla and returned him dead.

Rizvi made the remarks while addressing the central convening committee of Thikana Bangladesh in the capital’s Naya Paltan on Saturday.
