Another member of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) Election Commission resigned yesterday, deepening the ongoing controversy over the long-delayed polls.
DrRezwana Karim Snigdha, an associate professor of anthropology, announced her resignation around 2 p.m. on Saturday, reportedly in protest against the commission’s decision to continue ballot counting without addressing complaints of irregularities. Media reports said she submitted her resignation letter directly to the vice chancellor.
Her departure comes just a day after another commission member, Professor Mohammad MafruhiSattar, also stepped down, alleging that the commission had failed to act on widespread allegations of misconduct during the voting process.
Contacted for comment, Chief Election Commissioner Professor MdMoniruzzaman said he was not aware of Snigdha’s resignation. Attempts to reach her over the phone were unsuccessful.
Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor MdMahfuzur Rahman confirmed to reporters that Snigdha had left her position while the vote count was still underway.
The resignations mark a fresh blow to the credibility of the Jucsu polls-the first in 33 years-which have already been marred by boycotts, accusations of manipulation, and lengthy delays in publishing results.
With growing scrutiny over the process, student leaders and observers say the twin resignations underscore a crisis of confidence in the commission at a time when the university is struggling to revive a central student platform after decades of dormancy.
