The 4th annual national conference of Bangladesh Glaucoma Society (BGS) was held at a city hotel on Saturday.Prime Minister’s former Health, Family Welfare and Social Welfare Affairs Advisor Professor Dr Syed Modasser Ali was the chief guest of the conference where hundreds of eye and glaucoma specialists attended.Director General (DG) of Health Directorate Prof Dr Deen Muhammad Nurul Haque, SAARC Academy of Ophthalmology President Prof Ava Hossain, President of Bangladesh Academy of Ophthalmology Prof Shaikh MA Mannaf spoke as special guests with Ophthalmological Society of Bangladesh (OSB) President Prof M Shahab Uddin in the chair.Professor Dr Modasser Ali said, “In the medical services of our country, we have only one or two limitations, otherwise we can compete with the medical services of any other countries.” Prof Deen Muhammad said this type of conference creates an opportunity for the participants to exchange views and enrich their knowledge which would help to prevent of blindness in the country.”According to a survey published in 2004, in Dhaka, at least 2.8 per cent people are affected by Glaucoma, while 90 per cent of people do not know about the disease”, Secretary General of Bangladesh Glaucoma Society (BGS) Dr Nazneen Khan told BSS. Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve at the point where it leaves the eye to carry visual information to the brain.
