A Dhaka court granted a four-day remand for former law minister Anisul Huq in connection with the murder of vegetable vendor Md Shahabul Islam Shaon in Ashulia during last year’s mass uprising. Separately, former state minister for disaster management and relief Dr Enamur Rahman has been detained in another case linked to the killing of salaryman Shakil Anowar in the same area at that time.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Tajul Islam Sohag issued the orders after police produced the two defendants for hearings on the morning of 4 September. In the Shaon case, CID Inspector Md Khaja Golam Kibria had requested a seven-day remand for Anisul Huq, while in the Shakil case, Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Nazrul Islam sought Enamur Rahman’s arrest.

Anisul Huq’s lawyers sought bail, but prosecutors opposed it. Following the proceedings, the court rejected the bail request and remanded him.

Shaon’s death occurred near the Ashulia-Baipail intersection after he joined the August 4 uprising. His elder brother, Md Tawhidul Mia, filed a case naming 18 individuals and 300–400 unnamed suspects.

In the Shakil case, the victim joined the August 5 protest near the Baipail overpass and was shot in the face and forehead. Shakil’s wife filed a case against 86 people, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Enamur Rahman.

Anisul Huq was arrested from the Sadarghat area on 13 August last year while attempting to flee by waterway and has remained in custody since. Enamur Rahman was arrested in Dhaka’s Bhatara area on 26 January this year and has also been in custody since.
