Angry mob set 11 buses on fire in capital

Angry mob torched at least eleven passenger buses after a bus of Anabil Paribahan ran over a student at Rampura in the capital on Monday night.
The student named Mainuddin, who was also a tea vendor at Rampura Bazar, was crossing the road. The bus ran over him and also injuring few others.
Immediately after the incident, local people gathered on the spot and blocked the road, police and eyewitnesses said.
Later, agitated crowd torched the buses one after another in protest against the incident. Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam said, “A pedestrian was killed on the road when a bus of Anabil Paribahan hit him near Rampura Bazar at 11pm. Later, the mob blocked the road and set seven buses on fire.”
Ziaur Rahman, operator of the control room at the Fire Service and Civil Defense headquarters, said seven buses were set on fire following the incident. After receiving a call from 999, two units of the fire service reached the spot and doused the fire.
Authorities deployed additional police forces in the area amidst protests by locals against the accident.
Earlier, Nayeem Hasan, a second-year student of Notre Dame College, was killed in a road accident on Wednesday. A proxy driver was behind the steering wheel when a Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) garbage truck hit Nayeem in Gulistan. Police later seized the vehicle and arrested the contractual driver, Rasel Khan. After Nayeem’s death, students of different educational institutions continue to protest in the capital demanding road safety and justice over his death.
