After failing to secure registration as a new political party, Md Tarek Rahman, member secretary of Amjanatar Dal, began a hunger strike unto death in front of the Election Commission (EC) building in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Around 4 p.m., Tarek staged a hunger strike at the main gate of the EC building in Agargaon, holding a placard demanding party registration.
“The EC has excluded our party from the registration list without giving any reason. We will not leave until we get registration,” said Tarek Rahman.
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission (EC) announced that three political parties — the National Citizen Party (NCP), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), and Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party — are set to receive registration after fulfilling the required conditions.
Ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election, 143 parties had applied for registration. Of these, 121 applications were rejected during initial scrutiny, while the remaining 22 underwent further verification, according to EC sources.
Following this process, the EC decided to grant registration to the three parties. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said that after resolving appeals and objections, the final list of registered parties will be published in November.
