Adviser to the Interim Government, Mahfuj Alam on Saturday asserted that the Awami League (AL) should be barred from participating in the upcoming general election to prevent the resurgence of fascism in Bangladesh’s politics.

Speaking at a gathering in Hajiganj upazila, he declared, “If the Awami League is allowed to contest, it will pave the way for fascism to return.”

Marking a historical reference, Alam reminded the audience of January 25, 1975, when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman established BAKSAL, dissolving opposition parties and undermining democratic movements. “Prior to this, thousands of opposition leaders were forcibly disappeared, and horrific atrocities were committed by the Awami League,” he said, adding that these acts included mass disappearances, murders, and violence against women.

Alam prayed for the souls of four martyrs from Hajiganj who were killed during the anti-discrimination movement. He further emphasized the interim government’s commitment to bringing justice for victims of the previous regime and reforming institutions that suffered under Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. “Reforms are essential for a meaningful election and the transition to democracy,” he added.

The adviser highlighted the oppressive 16-year rule of the Awami League, during which families suffered irreparable losses. “Children were disappeared, mothers and sisters faced unspeakable violence, and thousands were maimed or killed. Such tyranny must never return,” Alam affirmed.

He reassured the crowd that the interim government would collaborate with political parties and stakeholders to implement reforms based on commission reports. “Without institutional reforms, corruption and fragility will persist, leaving the country trapped in inequality,” he cautioned.

The meeting also featured a vibrant procession at Hajiganj-Shahrasti in honor of Alam’s visit. He was warmly received by leaders of the Nagorik Committee, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, the Islamic Andolon, and other local groups.

Later, Mahfuj Alam is scheduled to attend a civic reception as the chief guest at Ramganj Government College in Lakshmipur, continuing his efforts to rally support for a democratic transition.

This statement underscores the interim government’s stance on safeguarding democratic principles while addressing past injustices and ensuring accountability through meaningful electoral reforms.
