An Awami League leader has been sent to in a criminal charge under the Anti-Terrorism Act over the party’s rally at Banglamotor in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter passed the order on Friday.
Police produced Kamruzzaman, a member of the party’s Agriculture and Cooperatives Affairs Sub-Committee, before the court and sought his detention.
Defence lawyer Shihab Mahmud applied for bail, while state counsel Azizul Haq Didar opposed the plea. After the hearing, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered the accused to be sent to jail, said Prosecution Division Sub-Inspector Zinnat Ali, reports bdnews24.com
Kamruzzaman was arrested from the Moghbazar around 4:30pm on Thursday.
According to the case details, on Sept 12, members of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League and affiliates of the Awami League held a rally in front of Rupayan Tower in Banglamotor.
They allegedly shouted anti-government slogans, aimed to “revive the activities of the banned group, and spread propaganda with the intention of conspiring against the state.”
As police arrived, the group attempted to flee. Several were detained on the spot.
Police filed the case at Ramna station the same day.
