Azam Shahabuddin, general secretary of the Awami League’s Gopalganj district unit, was arrested by immigration police at the Benapole checkpoint in Jessore on Tuesday morning while attempting to travel to India.
Azam, accompanied by his wife who was released as no charges were filed against her, was detained after his name appeared on a stop list during passport processing. Immigration officials had been alerted about his possible attempt to leave the country.
Azam is the son of the late Moin Uddin from Binapani Girls School Road in Gopalganj Sadar. He is facing multiple cases, including charges related to an attack on army personnel, vandalism, and arson in Gopalganj Sadar. The cases have been filed with both Gopalganj and Dhaka’s Jatrabari police stations.
After his arrest, Azam was handed over to the Benapole Port police station and is expected to be transferred to Gopalganj police for further legal proceedings.
Benapole Immigration Officer-in-Charge Elias Hossain Munshi confirmed that immigration officers had been on high alert for Azam’s departure and acted accordingly when he attempted to leave the country.
