BNP stages road marches in Motijheel, Uttara: AL govt turns country into a failed state: Fakhrul
Staff Reporter :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the ruling Awami League has turned the country into a failed state.
“They badly destroyed the country and its institutions,” Mirza Fakhrul said on Friday while addressing a silent road march organised by the BNP’s Dhaka Metropolitan South unit.
He further blamed the Awami League (AL) for Bangladesh not getting invited by the United States to its Summit for Democracy.
“It’s a matter of shame,’ the BNP leader said.
“People are struggling due to increased prices of daily commodities,” he said, adding, “Ordinary people are becoming poor day by day, while the Awami League leaders and activists are getting rich.”
Through the silent processions, Fakhrul said, they want to send out a message to the city dwellers to wake up and put up a resistance against the current government’s misrule and repressive acts and failure to run the country and check the growing prices of essential items.
Fakhrul said, “Awami League government has used the law enforcers to sustain in power. They used RAB for this purpose and RAB is facing sanction. Now they are using police.”
Speaking about the killing of their 10 leaders and workers amid their ongoing anti-government movement, he said, “Many of our leaders and workers are now behind bars. Police are detaining our workers in the localities at night. But they are failing to subdue us because BNP is doing the politics, not for them, but for the people.”
Claiming that Awami League is now terrified at BNP’s movement, Fakhrul said, “There is still time. Step down. The demand for the resignation of the government has now been spread nationwide. People have always won in the movement. It will take place again.”
Criticising the presidential election, Fakhrul said, “The election has proved that the country’s problems will not be solved with this constitution and it needs amendments. In our 27-point demand, we have talked about the amendment of the Constitution. It includes the installation of a caretaker government for holding election with the participation of all people.”
The Awami League-nominated Mohammad Shahabuddin was elected unopposed as the 22nd president of Bangladesh as the ruling party enjoys an overwhelming majority in the august House.
BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas said, “BNP is not waging movement to come to power. Through movement, BNP is fighting in the streets for establishing people’s rights and democracy.”
He also said that a section is looting the country in collaboration with some other groups like Indian Adani Group in the name of purchasing electricity at high cost.
He called upon India to support the people of the country and not the Awami League.
Another Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, “The BNP and the people share the same statement – the resignation of the government. We will not for election under this government without a non-partisan government. If the government believes in people’s power, it will resign voluntarily to hold a free and fair election.”
The marchers carried banners and placards with slogans of the resignation of the government and proceeded from Gopibagh to Nayabazar.
During this time the adjacent areas were clogged with vehicles as they were unable to move. A huge number of law enforcers were deployed with riot cars parked on roadsides to avert any kind of unwanted situation.
BNP also held its road march at Uttara in Dhaka Metropolitan North Unit where its senior leaders including Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain demanded the resignation of the government, saying that BNP will not participate in the national poll without a caretaker government.
