Election Commissioner Md. Anwarul Islam Sarker yesterday said the Awami League will not be able to participate in the upcoming national elections, as the party’s activities remain legally suspended.

“Legally, the activities of Awami League are suspended. Therefore, they will not be able to participate in the next election,” Anwarul told reporters after inaugurating a police training programme on election duty management at the Sylhet District Police Lines on Sunday (19 October).

Responding to a question about the electoral symbol of the National Citizen Party (NCP), the commissioner said that the matter would be decided in accordance with the Constitution and electoral laws.

Regarding the national elections, Anwarul said, “The elections will be held before Ramadan. There will be no more controversial elections like in the past. A fair and participatory election will be held with the cooperation of all.”

He emphasised that the Election Commission has taken a firm stance
to ensure no controversial individual is assigned to election duties. “No controversial person will be allowed to take part in election responsibilities,” he said.

The commissioner further stated that the law enforcement agencies are well-prepared for the polls, expressing optimism that law and order would not pose a challenge in the upcoming election.

“There is no situation that would delay the election beyond February,” Anwarul said, reiterating the commission’s determination to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process.
