Law enforcement authorities have arrested Hridoy Miaji, 23, a joint member secretary of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s (ADSM) Banani unit, in connection with the murder of Zahidul Islam Parvez, a student of Primeasia University.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel from RAB-11 apprehended Hridoy on Monday night from Monairkandi village in Titas upazila of Cumilla, where he had been hiding at the residence of his maternal uncle, Harun-or-Rashid Sikdar. Following his detention, he was handed over to Banani police at approximately 5:30pm on Tuesday.
Confirming the arrest, Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Russell Sarwar said Hridoy is a named accused in the murder case.
Parvez, a student in the English department of Primeasia University, was killed on Saturday afternoon in Banani after a quarrel reportedly broke out over comments directed at two female students from the University of Scholars. While the dispute was initially settled, a group of 30 to 40 individuals later ambushed Parvez outside the campus and attacked him with sharp weapons.
The severely injured Parvez was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Prior to Hridoy’s arrest, police detained three other suspects in the case from different areas in Dhaka. They have been identified as Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal, 19; Alvi Hossain Junayed, 19; and Al Amin Sani, 19.
The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement pursuing further leads to identify and arrest others involved in the fatal attack.
