Energy Adviser Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan stated on Saturday that the Adani Group has breached its agreement with Bangladesh, and a committee has been formed to assess whether the agreement should be continued or cancelled.
The Adviser said, “We are not accountable to anyone. Our accountability lies solely with those who were martyred, injured, or participated in the
July-August movement.
Beyond that, we are not accountable to anyone.”
He continued, “We have assumed responsibility, not power, driven by the spirit of the revolution. Therefore, we will face no difficulty in making any tough decisions.”
Khan made these remarks in response to questions from journalists during a discussion meeting in Itna, a haor upazila in Kishoreganj, regarding the agreement between the government of Sheikh Hasina and India’s Adani Group on electricity supply to Bangladesh.
The Adviser further stated, “The Sheikh Hasina government entered into a multi-billion-dollar agreement with the Adani Group for electricity supply to Bangladesh without any tender process.
This has caused significant financial losses to Bangladesh. In this deal, the Adani Group’s power plant received tax exemptions and other benefits from India.
However, this was concealed from Bangladesh, which constitutes a breach of the agreement.”
He added, “The Bangladesh Power Development Board has already informed Adani about this. Additionally, we have formed a national committee, led by former Justice Moinul Islam, to examine these matters.”
The committee is conducting an investigation into these issues, with legal aspects also under consideration. “We have received a directive from the High Court in this regard.
If we take any action, Adani might resort to legal proceedings. Therefore, we are consulting both local and foreign law firms to assess the legal aspects. We will proceed based on their recommendations.”
Khan also noted that the issue was not limited to Adani, as several other unequal agreements were made during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, which contradict national interests.
“The committee will examine seven such projects, including Adani’s. Based on their findings, we will decide whether to retain, amend, or terminate these agreements,” he said.
The discussion meeting, presided over by Deputy Commissioner Fauzia Khan, was attended by freedom fighters, local political leaders, government officials, teachers, journalists, and civil society members.
