16-year-old college student Alfi Shahriar Mahim got bail in the case related to the death of Abu Saeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, who was shot during the quota reform movement.
Thirteen days after jail, Thursday (August 1), Judge Mustafa Kamal of Rangpur Women and Child Torture Court granted him bail.
Mahim, a class 11 student of Rangpur Police Lines School and College, was scheduled for the bail hearing on August 4, but he was granted early bail as he was a child. His bail was confirmed by lawyers Jobaidul Islam and Baharul Islam.
Mahim’s lawyer Baharul Islam said that the court had fixed the date of his bail hearing on August 4.
But being a child and applying for anticipatory bail, the court granted bail.
According to police and local sources, AlfiShahriarMahim was arrested by the law and order forces on the afternoon of July 18. Since then he is in jail. Yesterday (July 31), Mahim’s sister SanjanaAkhtarSneha posted a status on social media Facebook, and the administration was shaken by the matter.
SanjanaAkhtar wrote, ‘The boy is a child according to legal documents; How are they harassing him like this? Most importantly, he was wearing a college dress. There was an ID card. He is a student of police institute. In this case, his educational institution, teachers, classmates, lawyers have nothing to do? For what reason have they detained my brother, not even allowing him to show up!’
The investigating officer in the case in which Mahim has been arrested is Sub-Inspector (SI) ZillurRahman of Tajhat Thana Police. He said, “He was picketing when he set fire to our Tajhat police station that day (July 17). At that time, along with our police, RAB and BGB teams were at the scene. At that time he (Alfi) was caught by the BGB.
In this regard, Deputy Police Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Abu MarufHossain (Crime) said, “When the police station was attacked, vandalized and looted on July 18, Mahim was arrested by the law enforcement forces while wearing jeans pants and sandogenji.” He was later taken into police custody. Police Commissioner sir took the decision as soon as the matter came to our knowledge, as Mahim was not involved in the incident. He just participated in the movement. Therefore, he can be released from this case through bail.
