The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation after preliminary evidence surfaced that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina used her influence to appoint Saima Wazed Putul to the position of regional director at the World Health Organization (WHO), despite her alleged lack of qualifications.

ACC Director General (Prevention) Mohammad Akhtar Hossain made these remarks during a press briefing on Wednesday.

He said, “An investigation has been launched into allegations that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina used her influence to appoint her daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, as the regional director for WHO Southeast Asia, despite her alleged lack of qualifications. The ACC decided to probe the matter after verifying preliminary details.”

When asked about the accusations against Putul, Akhtar Hossain said further details would be disclosed after the investigation.

Additionally, the ACC has decided to investigate allegations against Sheikh Hasina’s former principal secretary – Tofazzel Hossain Mia – who is accused of money laundering, bribery, and accumulating substantial assets beyond known income through corruption and abuse of power.
