The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has charged former IFIC Bank chairman Salman FazlurRahman, his son Ahmed Shayan Fazlur Rahman, and 9 others for laundering Tk 76 crore to London and embezzling Tk 33.64 crore in loans.
The commission’s director general Md Akhtar Hossain confirmed the matter on Thursday.
He said that the accused colluded to abuse their power and sanctioned a loan in the name of Beximco Group’s subsidiary, Index Power & Energy Ltd.
Violating the terms of the letter of credit (LC), they opened an LC for $9.82 million (Tk 76.39 crore) to import drawings and designs for Index Power & Energy (Unit-2) from a shell company named Kawaj in the British Virgin Islands. Instead of receiving the actual drawings and designs, they brought in mere documents, thereby laundering the money abroad.
Furthermore, the LC amount was converted into a forced loan, and even after eight years, the outstanding Tk 33.64 crore has not been repaid. Based on these allegations, a case has been filed against the accused for embezzlement.
