The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former Chief Whip and ex-Member of Parliament (MP) from Madaripur-1, Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, and his wife, Zinat Parveen Chowdhury, over allegations of amassing wealth beyond known sources of income and engaging in suspicious financial transactions.
ACC Director General (Prevention) Md. Akhtar Hossain confirmed the filing of the case on Monday.
According to the ACC’s report, Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury allegedly abused his position as a public servant to illegally acquire assets worth Tk 57.49 crore, which does not correspond with his declared earnings. Furthermore, he reportedly established business entities and operated eight bank accounts, through which Tk 1,175.90 crore was deposited total of Tk 2,321.18 crore in suspicious transactions.
The ACC also filed charges against Noor’s wife, Zinat Parveen Chowdhury, accusing her of using her husband’s influence and financial resources to unlawfully acquire assets worth Tk 138.16 crore, exceeding her known income.
The commission’s investigation reveals that Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury’s total assets, which include both immovable and movable properties, amount to Tk 471.07 crore. His family expenditures total Tk 185.55 crore, bringing the total to Tk 656.62 crore. After deducting his legitimate income of Tk 81.71 crore, the commission identified Tk 57.49 crore in unexplained wealth.
Similarly, Zinat Parveen Chowdhury’s assets are valued at Tk 129.42 crore, with family expenses amounting to Tk 17.34 crore. This brings her total assets to Tk 146.76 crore, with Tk 138.16 crore identified as unexplained wealth.
The ACC’s investigation into the couple’s financial activities is ongoing, with further developments expected.
