The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has seized Tk2.42 crore from former director general (DG) of Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) SaifulAlamDhaka’s cantonment residence.
On Thursday midnight (27 February), a joint force team led by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) with assistance from the commission has conducted the drive.
In response to a question from journalists at a press conference in front of the commission’s Segunbhagicha headquarters, ACC Director General (prevention) MdAkhtarHossain made the disclosure on Sunday (2 March).
DG Akterfurther informed that an investigation is underway against SaifulAlam.
According to ACC sources, based on a tip-off, in the early hours of Friday, a joint force comprising the DB, army, and other agencies conducted an operation at the residence of SaifulAlam, located inside the cantonment.
Upon receiving a requisition from DB and DMP, an ACC team assisted in the operation.
During the search, a total of Tk2.42 crore in cash was found inside two suitcases.
In response, the commission’s Deputy Director TahasinMunabilHaque, investigating officer for SaifulAlam’s assets, arrived at the residence and in the presence of neutral witnesses, seized the entire amount.
On Sunday, ACC deposited the confiscated cash, sealed inside two suitcases, into the treasury.
MdSaifulAlam was arrested on 13 January 2025.
Earlier in September, the bank accounts of SaifulAlam, his wife, and children were frozen on orders of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
SaifulAlam was sent on forced retirement in the same month. The removal came under Section 289 (A) of the Army Regulations, which pertains to removal for misconduct and inefficiency.
Saiful was commissioned into the army as a cadet of the 14th BMA Long Course from Bangladesh Military Academy. He had played the role of an area commander for the 11th Infantry Division of Bogura Cantonment.
Saiful was appointed as the DG of DGFI on 24 February, 2020.
After the fall of the Awami League government, MdSaifulAlam was posted to the foreign ministry on 6 August.
