The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an inquiry into an alleged syndicate, including Salman F Rahman, vice chairman of Beximco Pharma, over the embezzlement of Tk 22,000 crore in government funds during the procurement of Covid-19 vaccines.
ACC Director General Akhtar Hossain made this disclosure while speaking to journalists on Monday afternoon.
Salman F Rahman, a senior Awami League leader and owner of Beximco Group, previously served as the private industry affairs adviser to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. He was arrested following the fall of the Awami League government in last year’s student-led mass uprising and faces multiple legal cases.
On August 12, 2022, then-health minister Zahid Maleque said the Awami League government had spent approximately Tk 40,000 crore on Covid-19 vaccine procurement and related expenses.
