Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called on the newly appointed Chairman and Commissioners of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to voluntarily disclose their income and asset statements as a measure to enhance accountability and transparency.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, TIB also urged the officials to clarify their positions regarding any allegations of corruption and to disclose any political affiliations.

The anti-corruption watchdog highlighted the importance of fulfilling their duties with integrity and honesty, aligning with the principles of the anti-discrimination movement and the sacrifices that paved the way for a “New Bangladesh.”

TIB’s Executive Director, Dr Iftekharuzzaman, remarked, “At this critical juncture in the nation’s history, with the ACC under public scrutiny, we urge its leadership to set an example of transparency and accountability by proactively disclosing their assets.”

TIB emphasised that transparency should extend beyond the officials themselves to include the income and assets of their immediate family members, particularly those held under direct or beneficial ownership. Furthermore, there should be consistency between reported incomes from legitimate sources and accumulated wealth.

The watchdog recommended that an independent auditor verify the accuracy, adequacy, and consistency of these disclosures. It also called for investigations into any past or present allegations of abuse of power, irregularities, or corruption during their professional careers.

TIB further proposed that ACC leaders disclose any partisan political ties and issue a formal declaration expressing their readiness to resign voluntarily and face legal scrutiny if any discrepancies are identified.
