ACC files case against Atiur, Barakat, 21 others

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former Bangladesh Bank governor AtiurRahman, former Janata Bank chairman and economist AbulBarkat, and 21 others over alleged embezzlement of Tk297 crore in the name of AnonTex Group.
ACC Director General MdAkhtarHossain confirmed that Deputy Director MdNazmulHussain lodged the case at the anti-graft watchdog’s integrated district Office of Dhaka on Thursday (20 February).
According to case documents, the accused, in collusion with one another, engaged in fraud and forgery to create false records and embezzle Tk297,38,87,296 from the corporate branch of Janata Bank in Dhaka.
The allegations against the accused include approving loans by falsely showing non-existent buildings/factories on mortgaged land, despite the fact that no such structures existed.
Additionally, they allegedly overvalued the purchased land, which had no structures, to secure the loan, read the case documents.
Former central bank governor Atiur has been accused of abusing his power by violating Bangladesh Bank’s BRPD Circular 05/2005, despite knowing that the borrower was a new and obscure businessman. He allegedly facilitated the approval and embezzlement of Tk297 crore in loans by unjustifiably relaxing the MoU signed between Bangladesh Bank and Janata Bank.
Apart from Atiur and Barkat, the accused include former BB deputy governor Abu Hena Mohammed RajiHasan, former BB assistant director MusammetIsmatara Begum, and former Janata Bank directors Jamal Uddin Ahmed, MdImdadul Haque, Nagibul Islam Dipu, RM Debnath, Md Abu Naser, Sangita Ahmed, and Nitai Chandra Nath.
AnonTex Group Chairman MdYunusBadal, Suprov Spinning Ltd Managing Director Anwar Hossain and Director Md Abu Talha have also been accused in the case.
The other accused include Janata Bank’s former branch manager and general manager (GM) Abdus Salam Azad, former deputy GM AzmulHaque, former assistant GM Ajoy Kumar Ghosh, former manager MdGolamAzam, SME Department Executive Engineer MdShahjahan, SEO MdEmdadulHaque, former DGM Md Abdul Jabbar, former GM MdGolamFaruk, DGM Umar Faruk.
