India’s Border Security Force (BSF) has taken into custody a Bangladeshi police officer who is a key accused in the murder of Abu Sayeed at the Hakimpur checkpost in Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

The suspect has been identified as Mohammad Arifuzzaman, an Assistant Police Superintendent of the Armed Police Battalion (APBn)-2 in Muktagacha, Mymensingh. He had been suspended for being absent without official leave.

Arifuzzaman was apprehended near the Hakimpur border outpost on Saturday evening and subsequently handed over to West Bengal police for questioning, according to Indian media reports. Officials confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify possible accomplices and determine the motive behind the killing. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces.

Satkhira’s Additional Police Superintendent, Mukit Hasan Khan, stated that Arifuzzaman was previously posted with Rangpur Metropolitan Police before 5 August last year and was transferred to Muktagacha, where he remained until 13 October. “He has been absent without permission since 14 October, which led to his suspension,” he noted.

The officer’s alleged involvement came to light amid last year’s violent crackdown on protesters demanding the repeal of the controversial public sector quota system. The month-long demonstrations culminated in the resignation of the Awami League government on 5 August, prompting several police personnel to go into hiding.
