Art & Culture Report :
Solo painting exhibition of Syed Hasan Mahmud titled Abstract Serenity is going on at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts in the city’s Dhanmondi area now.
The three-week long exhibition was jointly inaugurated by art critic and Italian Ambassador to Bangladesh Giorgio Guglielmino, eminent artist Monirul Islam and art critic Prof Abul Monsur.
Artist Syed Hasan has been greatly influenced by Jackson Pollock, an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement.
Applying pigments and assembling lines are the main aspects in his paintings. Bushes and deep forest have appeared in his works, as part of his recent experimentation on nature and its mysterious aspects.
The painter does detailed work of throwing acrylic on the canvas, a bit at a time, so that his work is minute and is certainly time-consuming.
He has worked so precisely that one can comprehend the cadence of the falling leaves only from a distance. He is a painter of enormous tolerance and imagination.
Syed Hasan was born in Dhaka in 1958. He did h is BFA in Drawing and Painting at Institute of Fine Arts (now the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka) in 1981.
In recognition of his contribution to fine arts, the artist was honoured with Honorable Mention Award and Second Tone National Miniature Art Competition Award. He is the principal of Jhapi School of Art and Art Consultant at Shatotto Architecture for Green Living.
The exhibition will continue till November 15. n
