A breast cancer awareness seminar was held at the Auditorium of the Department of Architecture in Segunbagicha. This event was jointly organized by ‘Aamra Nari,’ ‘Aamra Nari Research and Development,’ and the Ministry of Housing and Public Works of the Government of Bangladesh. The seminar, attended by female officers from nine departments and agencies within the ministry, aimed to raise awareness about breast cancer, emphasize the importance of early detection, and provide essential information on preventive measures, says a press release on Thursday.

According to the World Health Organization, around 15,000 women in Bangladesh are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, with approximately 7,500 succumbing to the disease. Due to social barriers and lack of awareness, many women struggle to identify early symptoms of breast cancer.

Addressing this reality, the keynote speaker, Dr. Umme Humaira Kaneta, a breast cancer specialist from the National Institute of Cancer Research and Hospital (NICRH) discussed breast cancer risk assessment, early symptom identification, and the importance of regular screenings for women. She noted that performing self-exams monthly starting at age 20, and getting an annual mammogram starting at age 40, can play an effective role in breast cancer prevention.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Md. Abdur Rahman Tarafder, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works, as well as other notable guests including Joint Secretary Syeda Farhana Kawnain, Joint Secretary Most. Ferdousi Begum, and Chief Engineer Mir Manzurur Rahman, Head of the Department of Architecture. Representing the organizers, Mr. M M Zahidur Rahman (Biplob), the founder and Chief Coordinator of ‘Aamra Nari’ and ‘Aamra Nari Research and Development,’ was also present as a speaker. On behalf of Aamra Nari, Biplob presented a token of appreciation to the Ministry of Housing and Public Works.
